SHORT STUFF: Elaine's highly spiritually sensitive and emotionally constipated and killed like 6 people for pretty much no reason
LONGER STUFF:
1. Before coming to forest (and for a long time while she was there) she perceived herself as a monster due to the popular opinion that she cursed her entire family by being born, which is held not only by most of society where she lives at large but also much of her family (except for her grandmother and mother, who spread the rumor, and her father who loves her anyway and refuses to dignify questions about it with a response. she gets support from exactly none of them.). She was never outright physically harmed but folks are typically not super comfortable with her due to that and tend to ignore her at best. Max social isolation. At worst she's been poisoned before and one of her uncles tried to convince her dad to drown her in a river before she got well enough to leave the house.
2. The purpose of this rumor was partially to ensure that she maintained relatively little ego and stayed easy to mold and manipulate so she could be sacrificed to a god as part of a church coup (which has larger meaning in the larger metaplot but that's unimportant, the important part is elaine has always been a huge tool on every level). The ideal here is that she's completely free of worldly desires so it perceives the body as empty and possesses it, but if that fails the person just gets eaten. Her death that led to her coming to AFD was the result of the second, despite her trusting in her mother (who convinced her of these things) and her god that she could do this and make up for the trouble she's caused her family and make her friend happy and also be happy herself through a marriage with that god. But nope, she fucked up and died alone, and her mother moved on to another child because she wasn't ever all that special to begin with.
3. In combination of 1 and 2 Vanilla Elaine is literally Avenger Elaine so that's where all the anger over these things got repressed off to.
