there's a slightly worn bit of paper tucked under the bowl. "因果応報" has been carefully caligraphed onto it, with a translation in plainer writing underneath— "what goes around comes around."

[The bowl now also contains one of those miniature books that are only a couple inches in height, perfect for sticking in your bag or in a small offering bowl. This one is Buying Mittens, a children's story by Nankichi Niimi.

Someone also left some strawberry candies in there. Wrapped, of course, so they won't get the book sticky or anything.]
